January Update

Happy 2020.2

To start off the new year on the right foot, Dani and I managed to finally get COVID. After two years of doing all that we could to lower the risk of getting it, the law of probability just happened to catch up to us.

Thankfully, symptoms were mild and we're both on the mend.

The other big piece of news is that I applied to an internal posting at work for a position out West. The formal title is Data Protection Architect - which is pretty much what I do now. The only change would be that I'd move up to the next level (Manager). I'm largely doing that work and have been for a little while now, so it'll be nice if I make it through the process.

That would mean, however, that we'd be picking up and moving. Right now the region has locations in Denver, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle. I am hoping that I'll be able to land somewhere back close to home, but we'll have to see how things shake out if I make it through to the end.

If I don't make it, then I stay here and keep doing what I'm doing. If I do, then we'll move and I'll just get paid more for doing what I'm already doing. It's all pretty unclear right now and there's little detail I can share that would provide more context or clarity for anyone reading this.

Truth be told, Dani and I are both on the fence. It would be a great opportunity. But, we'd be leaving behind friends and family here and she'd be departing a job that she dearly loves with coworkers that adore her. And that's heartbreaking :(

All that said, everything above isn't set in any kind of stone. Ultimately (and I apologize for sounding horribly mercenary about this), if the financials don't work out in terms of an offer, then we just can't make the move. The West coast has such a higher cost of living that to relocate would be utterly untenable.

More to come!
